Hunter, JHD

It's only 2 pm, but since I got up at 5:15 am, I feel like I've had a full day!

I took Hunter and Jubilee to an AHBA herding trial this weekend. We entered in the JHD (Junior Herding Dog) class both days. It is basic herding ability + control test--your dog has to work with you to move the sheep around some obstacles and has to stop at the end. It takes a bit of skill and instinct from the dog, a responsive dog, and a handler with a wee dram of know-how. Not hard--but not just a free pass either.

On Saturday, Jubilee gave me the middle paw pad and tried to take down a sheep. She didn't call off and let go until I went and convinced her. (And the judge leaned over and yelled at her too.) She failed. Oops! But Hunter passed. She was a bit more stressed than I'd like, but the guy in the test before us kept yelling at his dog "LIE DOWN! LIE DOWN! I SAID LIE DOWN!!!" And her ears kept twitching and falling with each yell until she was Ms. Sadface with her ears at half mast and off to the side. Hunter is a delicate flower!!!

Today, however,  I got up earlier and arrived at the field in time to go to an empty area and play ball with Jubilee for about 20 minutes. I asked her for downs to throw the ball, downs to get the ball, downs while I walked around, etc. In general, playing with her, but also reinforcing obedience. To some degree, this worked. She was pretty good in the herding--until the very last bit where I ask her to lie down so I could open the gate and let my sheep out. Then she couldn't bear it any longer and tried to split a sheep off and chase it. But this time, I yelled at her and she quit and the sheep came back to me and I opened the gate and all 3 sheep were QUITE pleased at the prospect of getting away from this predator. And then I asked her to lie down and she did and I called her to me, and she came, and it was good and we passed. WHEW.

Hunter also did better today. I made sure that she wasn't following the yelling guy and I told her she was good and walked in happy and with a happier dog. And she did some nice things--picked up the stock smoothly and gently and at a nice trotting pace and when the stock did split, she chased the single but moved to his outside when I asked and pushed him back to the other sheep and she didn't bite--she did open her mouth and think about it though! She wasn't as "on" as I want her to be, but much improved and she also passed today!

So, she is Blackthorn's Hunter, JHD. Yay!

Stereotyping Really Pisses Me Off

I've seen a lot of pooh-poohing of Muslims regarding the Ft. Hood tragedy and that American Muslims are afraid of retaliation. A lot of the comments run along the lines of this one:

"Well, the religion teaches exactly what happened in Ft. Hood, so they shouldn't be surprised about this sort of thing."

Yeah, because every single Christian believes the same thing, stones adulterers, gives up their worldly possessions, and follows their holy book to the letter too, right?

In case any of the people who believe the above read this post, I'll remind them that after when some religious zealots decided a smart idea would be to fly some planes into some buildings on U.S. soil, numerous people who's only affiliation to those terrorists was their skin color were murdered in cold blood simply because they had the same ethnicity. People (who, if you want to play the "religion and color of skin game" were white and Christian based on the demographics of the U.S.) walked into various places and killed Middle Eastern people as a method of vigilante justice to appease their anger and calm their souls.

But, yeah. Muslims are the only ones who are barbaric and commit heinous acts of violence, right?

The idea that a large group of people all believe the same thing and will act on it violently is absolutely ridiculous. That's true, regardless of whatever group we analyze.

Look, I used to work at a Christian Talk radio station. I ran the on-air board for a talk show on there for two years and every single time that a stereotypical comment about Muslims was said by the host (who was a former pastor), a Muslim listener would call up and argue that the host was wrong. This went on for a few months until the Muslim finally said:

"What issues do you have with my religion?"

The host took 45 minutes out of his show and confronted the Muslim about everything he had an issue with. The result?

The host was convinced that Islam was not a religion of hate or violence.

It is so stupidly easy to assume the worst in people due to part of a population acting like complete assholes or hearing about religious zealots committing atrocities.

Resist it. Assuming only makes an ass out of you and me. Learn the truth.

I don't care about what people's opinion about the Iraq War is. But know that one of the main reasons that stability arrived in the region is because the Islamic terrorists started bombing Iraqi Muslims. That wouldn't have been happened if all Muslims were all on the same page.

Large groups aren't comprised of people who all believe exactly the same thing. Especially when it comes to religion and politics. That's why Anti-Americanism is just as wrong as religious stereotypes.

If you are against the former, but commit the latter, then it's probably time to do some analysis and get your head on straight. Otherwise, you're a hypocrite.

Was Baby Cookie Monster ever on Sesame Street? More importantly, when the cake is this adorable, does it matter? :)

[info]puggy

Morning

It's not too bad outside today. A bit warmer than the past few mornings. At least Biscuit wasn't shivering when I took her out for her morning potty.
I had a little chat with my "Ma"'s youngest son last night. He is an artiste. He can draw something and reproduce it as if it were a camera pic just in ink or in pencil. I asked him to draw me a pug picture with the word "Puggy" on it. I'd like it for my room. He has always had that talent. When he was 6 or 7 he used to draw his super hero dolls. He had batman, robin, green lantern, aqua man, all of that. He is rather talented. His physical disabilities keep him from doing much now, but he can still draw. With a talent like his, he should never be broke, but he is. I told him to check into selling his work on ebay just to get his name out there. If he makes that for me, I will frame it, get a pic of it, and post it here for you guys to see.
I used to draw as well. The last good thing I had drawn was a lady wearing a wide brimmed hat made of lace for a wedding. A cameo like pic. My art teacher gave me a "C" on it because she thought I'd used the opaque projector to draw it with. She couldn't believe I could reproduce it so well because it was on a large poster sized sheet of sketch pad paper from a small 2" by 2" newspaper picture. I told her that if I'd have used that piece of equipment I would have had to do it in front of her, as she has the only one available in the school and we all had to get permission to use it. I hated her for that. I worked my ass off to draw it so perfectly. My then foster m other called the school about that as she had witnessed me drawing it, but nothing came of it. The grade stood as it was. The art teacher was such a bitch, and that just reinforced that for me. It also reinforced the idea I had that no matter how hard I tried at anything in life, that it would never amount to anything anyway. I gave up artistic drawing at that point and never picked up a pencil or sketch pad again. I have never drawn since. That was when I was only 15. I am now 45. I have lost my drawing skills over the years because of 30 years of not practicing it.

As far as today goes, let's see what today brings.

[info]screamingogre

Been way too long

So its been a few months since my last update.  Where to start...

Baby:  These past 8 months have flown by.  Sherry is scheduled for a c-section on November 24th.  Yes, two days before Thanksgiving....  I'm planning on bringing her some Thanksgiving food as her Step-mom is hosting at her place close to the hospital.  The other thing is that she will not be allowed to have visitors.  I'm the only one who can go and see her.  So I'm setting it up so that we can webcam with her from the hospital room on her new laptop.  If anyone wants to do that with her, just let me know and I'll send you the info.

Steven:  Is growing like a weed and is learning at the same rate.  He is excited about the idea of being a big brother.  I'm sure that will fade as soon as we come home with a little squeeling baby that will sleep across from his room in a few months....  I'm needing to watch what I say around him more and more as he loves repeating me.  He's aso starting to get into playing video games (mostly me playing video games he likes).  He loves to cuddle with dad while playing his Cars Racing game on my PS3.  Much fun and love...  :)

SCA:  Sherry and I are going to step back from the SCA for a bit.  With the baby coming and our finanicial situation at the moment we need to take a break for a bit.  We'll still be around and maybe poke our heads in at a few local events and practices here and there but no Pennsic or Gulf Wars for the short term.

Redskins:  Why should I feel so dissapointed.  I'm use to the losing and bad publicity, but this year is tremendously bad.  Talk of the organization suing ticketholders who can't make payment due to the downturn, banning signs from the stadium, ect...  We need a GM who can tell Snyder to stay the hell out of football and just run the business.  Hopefully this offseason will see the departure of mister lazy eye (Cerrato) and the implementation of a real GM.  We'll see.

Car:  The car is coming to the end of its useful life.  The thing has lasted nearly 9 years and 150k miles.  The problem now is that things are slowly starting to go bad with the car.  Were hitting that point of more maintenence + no payment  = more than payment.  So we are planning on using tax money/bonus/extra money to help payoff some bills and hopefully around March we can get me a new car.  The Corrola has held up wonderfully but I abused that car with the 100 miles a day I put on it to go to work.  We'll see what happens.

I better run.  I've got some house cleaning to do before Sherry's flameless candle party thing today.

[I posted this a couple days ago, but messed up the code and didn't realize it until just now. Ordinarily, I'd just fix the old post, but these two links are too good (each in their own right) and I wanted to make sure y'all saw them. :)

Two great links from [info]badrap_blog:

    NaNo Day 7

    Gone fishin'.

No, really. I went fishing today. And thus, my wordcount suffered, but boy did my creative juices need the boost. And OMG, it was FANTASTIC. We saw a bald eagle, and red-shouldered hawks, and I think I even saw a golden eagle. It was some kind of hawk or eagle, large and brown, soaring over us, looking at us with that far-away gaze that raptors have.

And of course the seagulls, and cormorants, and the pelicans--old men of the sea. :D I love pelicans.

I caught a ton of grunts. I declared myself queen of the grunts at one point, I was catching them so often. I caught two trout, too, all shiny and pink and speckled, but they were too small to keep. And we saw a stingray, while C and J fished off a sandbar.

I am sunburned. TOASTY. (Proof? See? My hair is a wreck, too. Sun and surf do not a happy hairstyle make. But I had fun.) I am going to now go take a shower, slather on aloe vera, and curl up with ice cream and a good TV show. Cats 101 is on!

I got today's errands done. It took the expected amount of time to get them done too, LOL! I took J and his mom out to breakfast at that new Brownie's restaurant, and then we all went to Schenectady to pick up his pay. Lots of cops out today. I saw at least four State Troopers. We saw very low flying C-130 military planes all afternoon. Not just in that area, but over our house here. It made me wonder just where were they going so low, it's not like there is a landing strip here. Unless they were just doing excersises.
I have the kitchen all nice and shiny again, and one load of washing done, and another just in the washer.
I sold two more afghans in ebay, thank you to the buyers! :)
I have one more to go.
I had a two hour nap as well, and feel better for it.

    On The Road Again

So, as some of you know, Jen and I have picked up our bootstraps and our IV bags and gone back out to finish the tour. Our first stop was Kansas City, official state motto "The Home of Steak and Tornadoes." We got to meet about 200 awesome fans and a bunch of the folks from Andrews McMeel, our book publishers, came by. We even had a few "Super Fans:"

These three drove all the way from St. Louis, MO to be there. Talk about dedication! And check out those super-cool, custom shirts. They even brought us one. Here's a closeup of the back:

They explained that they made the shirts for the first tour before I got sick so the last few dates are wrong. I think maybe a red sharpie slash through those dates would take care of it in true Cake Wrecks fashion.

Of course, we did the cupcake wreckplica competition and here were our three enthusiastic winners:

Okay, two enthusiastic winners, and Logan who had a terribly itchy nose but was far to polite and gentlemanly to scratch it. Wreck on, my young friend. You're a better man than I am.

The dead rose petal wedding cake was the winner:

Crystal C. made the monkey/frog cake, complete with custom painted paper flotsam:

And Logan made a near perfect copy of the "I'm purrin for you" cupcake cake (ptoiee!)

Honorable mentions go out to Emily Spittler who made some of the most realistic icing poo I have ever seen:

And to Kathy Spittler (I wonder if they're related) who made the snowman from one of my all time favorite posts:

Fantastic, right? Well there's lots more where those came from, so check out the Kansas City Facebook Page for more great entries!

Our next stop was New York City, Official Motto, "Phenomenal Cosmic Powers! Iiitty bitty living space." We were at what is apparently the smallest Barnes and Noble in the world. (Maximum occupancy: 4, as long as they aren't wearing heavy coats.) That said, this was our view of the crowd:

There were actually people sitting on the floor in front of the lady in pink. Let's just say we were "cozy."

Though we only had six entries, we managed to find three champions:

The girl in the middle was even decked out with various wrecky accoutrement. Carrot earrings ftw!

The winner's cake was the nauseated basketball:

And then there was Cookie Monster (appropriate for this week's Sesame Street celebration):

And an also seasonally-appropriate Thanksgiving turkey, shaped like a football:

We actually had two bakers for the show. (Score!) The first was Perfect Endings Bakery and their cake was a Cake Wrecks Wreckerator Wrecker (Woo! Wreck-alicious!):

Complete with side panel signage misspelling:

And we also had Jacy Cakes who provided an awesome gluten-free book cake, which (appropriately) was dropped mid-transit, resulting in a Wreck Wreck. Despite the few bumps and scrapes, however, it still looked pretty sweet:

I thought it was cool that they even managed to nail the Andrews McMeel "U" Logo on the book spine:

And that's about it for the first two shows of Cake Wrecks - The "World" Tour, Part 2! You can check out more pics from the New York Facebook Page. Stay tuned for a wrap-up of Bethesda, Boston and Atlanta!

    [info]puggy

    Morning

I woke a little more congested than usual. No major, it'll pass. I did sleep fairly well, once I got to sleep.
I only have two stops to make today on the errands list, but I know with J's mother along for the ride she will have more stops to make, and will turn it into a three hour thing. I should have a taxi meter installed, LOL!
    Let's see what today brings.

I have some ebay auctions ending in a few hours.

A few posts back, we had a lively discussion as to the characteristics of a certain guitar.

Well, we’re in luck, gang!  There’s no debate needed on THIS one, because he’s listed everything for us:

    2006 Victory Jackpot – $16000

    2006 Victory Jackpot
    Sunset red
    5057 miles
    100 c.i. engine/6-speed transmission
    250 rear tire
Never wrecked or dropped, no damage
    Runs perfectly
    •••
Upgrades: Monaco mag wheels, Arlen Ness Slashness pipes, custom v-bars, mirrors, pegs, grips
    $24,000 total investment
Tires have less than 500 miles wear
    •••
    Call Mike at ###-###-####
    478a478b
    478c478d</p>

See. No possible argument here. This is clearly a 2006 Victory Jackpot Guitar. I’m pretty sure that’s the one Jack Black plays in “Brütal Legend.”

This guitar is sunset red, has 5057 miles on it, and has a 100 c.i. engine / 6-speed transmission. That’s pretty good, actually. My guitar is only a 55 c.i. engine, and it really struggles on hills.

Also, it has 250 rear tires! Isn’t that amazing? Most guitars only have one!

    Thanks for the link, Eric!

    A Business Question About Guns

Does anyone know what the typical, retail mark-up on a firearm is? For example, say a given gun is retailing for $500; what price did the manufacturer most like sell that weapon for?

The reason I'm asking is because I have an idea for a gun, but I need to do some cost accounting equations to determine it's commercial viability. Any insight that those here could provide would be appreciated. Thank you.

How does it make you feel when you start to walk into a business and see a "No Guns" sign prominently posted? Are you angry? Offended? Indifferent? How do you react? Do you just turn around and take your business elsewhere? Complain to the management? Just ignore it and go on with your business? The members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League take "No Guns" signs as personally offensive and they let their offense be known - to the business, to fellow VCDL members, and anyone else who'll listen - or read a web page.

Also, I came within inches of hitting a moose with my car. Inches. My heart still racing, though the shot of Jack has helped. Not my fault it was just standing there on the bridge in the middle of th road, And as I slammed on brakes and swerved, it just slowly turned its head and looked at me, with the "what are YOU doing here at 1AM" look on his face. I frantically flashed my brights at the car up the road so he'd get an idea that he should slow down and NOT hit the moose. he didn't. hit the moose, I mean.

    Final Reminder for Bookshops

    posted by Neil
A quick reminder (as I was just asked) that today is the day that the bookshop Graveyard Book party reports have to be in to Harper Collins. By 9 pm PST.

http://files.harpercollins.com/Mktg/HarperChildrens/PDF/GraveyardContest_rules.pdf are the rules and info for those who lost them.

    Hi Mr. Gaiman,

I was disappointed today to read you won't be part of the judging for The Graveyard Book contests. My not-wealthy, middle-of-nowhere bookstore just sent in its entry, and something we're concerned about is the fairness of judging.

For example, independent bookstores like Powell's (I'm sure you know) easily have enough money and are in a convenient enough location to ask you to come at one time or another. Against stores like that, who were able to put more money into their parties, we stand little chance.

I don't think that it's a lost cause for us; we were very creative. I'm just nervous to know you won't be judging. Can you tell me whether you think the judges will take things like size and location of bookstores into account? It would make me sleep a little easier until the results are announced.

    Tusen takk,

Well, per the rules, the judging is based on:

    (i) Overall creativity of the Party, as demonstrated by the invitations, signage, decorations, activities, entertainment, and refreshments.
(ii) Customer attendance and response (i.e., enthusiasm, costumes, participation).
(iii) Ability to capture and represent the spirit of The Graveyard Book.

...specifically to reward creativity, and not the ability to outspend other shops. (That was also why the party had to actually be at the bookshop, and not at another location.)

I asked my editor, Elise Howard, and she said,

Gosh, yes. Here's what we think is happening. We are looking at all the entries. On Monday, we'll send you the best 11, from which you will choose the Grand Prize Winner. The rest will get the first-prize package. So the short answer is that you ARE helping to choose.

The longer answer is that we will be very fair and will consider creativity, which includes work done with available resources, along with pure execution. (Don't you think? We haven't done anything yet; still waiting for more entries to come in.)

    ...which means that

    a) I was wrong and will be the ultimate judge, from the shortlist. (Damn.)

    and

    b) everyone's on a level playing field.

    Does that help reassure you?
